Deby Ryan
Use your kids’ outgrown jeans, shorts, or skirts to make a cute bag! You can create a purse, shopping bag, murse (man’s purse), or laptop carrying case! Master seamstress Deby Ryan will show you the tricks to designing and sewing a fabulous bag from recycled clothes.
Materials
- 1 pair of pants, jeans, or a skirt
- waist should be 32″ or smaller (this will be the size of the opening at the top of your bag)
- Use your child’s favorite pants, or perhaps something with cool fabric such as “retro” jeans from the thrift shop!
- Coordinating thread
- Handle for bag — can use the pant leg, an old belt, or extra fabric from the skirt bottom
- Lining — approximately 1/2yd of coordinating fabric. You should consider using scraps from your stash to make this a truly eco-friendly endeavor!
- Sewing machine that can handle heavy fabrics, with a heavy-duty needle (size 14 or higher)
- Optional (these items can be borrowed from CQ and shared among students):
- Scissors
- Rulers
- Strong rotary cutters and mats
- Laptop bags may require more items, such as foam lining to protect the computer
Crafters Quarters has a well-equipped kitchenette, so feel free to bring your lunch! We also have some wonderful restaurants close by from which you can order take-out for lunch.
