February 11, 25 & March 10 (Saturdays); 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
Optional Fabric Discussion Date: January 28 (Saturday); 2:00 - 3:00 pm
Instructor: Ann Cummings and Jensi Rogers
Design absolutely fabulous quilts using just one fabric! Using the Maxine Rosenthal’s One Block Wonders method, we will create hexagonal kaleidoscope-like blocks from a single print. The blocks fit together to make completely a completely unique quilt. The final quilt will be about the size of a small throw — unless you decide to add more to it! Unlike other hexagonal block patterns, there are no Y-seams using this method, just sew in straight lines!
Skill level: Confident beginner, you should know how to rotary cut and do machine sewing. We will teach you the rest!

Fabric Requirements:
Before I even start… You are invited to a special One Block Wonder Fabric Discussion Day! If you are signed up for the class, come to this FREE discussion to learn more about the fabric you’ll use in the quilt. We will even have appropriate fabrics for you to purchase at a great discount! (Fabric choices are on a first-come, first-served basis.)
OK. Here’s a description of the type of fabric you will need. This can be a little confusing, quilting fans, so hang in there…
Basically, you will want a fabric that has the following attributes:
- A large print with an interesting background (meaning that the background behind the main print, if you can see it, should be mottled or have some design). A large amount of plain background may be too overpoweringly plain in the quilt.
- The print should not have straight lines in it (such as border fabric). Curvy, wavy, or organic lines work wonderfully well.
- The large print needs to have a large repeat (24″ is ideal, less than 12″ may not work very well). To measure the repeat, look at the selvage for a distinctive design in the fabric print that is on that printed edge. Now move your eyes down the selvage until you see that same distinctive design again, located in the same place on the edge of the printing. Measure the distance between the designs, and that is the repeat!
- How much to buy? You need to have at least 6 repeats. If you have a 24″ (or 2ft.) repeat, this would mean you would buy a little more than 4yds — 4 1/2 works well to ensure you have enough to cut 6 repeats. If you want to make a bed-sized quilt top or to use the same fabric for the back of your throw, you will need to buy more. We also suggest that you buy a little more if you wish to use the original fabric in your final quilt (which is recommended). Some people will use the fabric for a border or the back. Do not wash the fabric!
You will also need:
- Coordinating or neutral thread (available for purchase at CQ)
- Thin, long, flat-head pins — such as flower-head pins (available for purchase at CQ)
- Large rotary cutter with a sharp blade (available for purchase at CQ) – 45mm can work, but 60mm can be better to cut through 6 layers of fabric
- Sewing machine for the second class (you may also reserve a CQ sewing machine at no extra charge, subject to availability)
Optional items:
- Rotary cutting mat (available for purchase at CQ, or can share our studio supplies with other students)
- 1/4″ guide foot (available for purchase at CQ for most machines)
Workshop Fee: $65 (Members $50)
Materials Fee:
$41.31 + tax (that’s 10% off with your workshop discount!)
We will provide the following in the workshop:
- 60° ruler (this one actually measures 3 angles – for 30°, 60°, and 120° cuts!)
- One Block Wonders book by Maxine Rosenthal
Note: If you have already purchased these items, we will not charge you a second time. Just bring yours in to class.
