Hand Applique Blocks in progress

Third Sunday of each month, 1 - 4 pm

  • December 18
  • January 15
  • February 19
  • March 18

Sandy Mackay

Skill Level:  Complete novice through experienced sewers!  Everyone is welcome.

Do you enjoy hand sewing?  Have you admired antique and modern appliqué quilts but were afraid to try?  Or are you an experienced appliquer who wants to spend time sewing with kindred spirits?  Come to CQ’s new monthly hand appliqué club.

During the first hour Sandy will give a Block of the Month class using Ellie Sienkiewicz’s book Baltimore Elegance.  The blocks will finish to 8″ squares.  The classes will cover different methods for transferring patterns to your project, cut-away appliqué, curves, points and circles, needle turn appliqué with an invisible stitch and different embellishment techniques.

The rest of the afternoon will be spent stitching.  Sandy is available for questions and help all afternoon.

You are not restricted to the class projects, bring any project you want and spend a pleasant afternoon in good company and pick up or share tips and techniques.  You can join us anytime!

If you plan to take the class you will need (*indicates items available at CQ - items recommended in class are 10% off!):

  • *Baltimore Elegance, by Ellie Sienkiewicz (see Elly talk about the book in this video)
  • *Enough background fabric for a finished project, Sandy is planning to make at least 9 blocks from Baltimore Elegance. If you want a 9 block finished wall hanging with no sashing or borders, you will need a minimum of 1 ¼ yards.
  • *A variety of fabrics for the appliqués. Bring your own fabric or pull from CQ’s scrap bins.
  • *50 wt cotton embroidery thread to match the appliqué fabrics
  • Freezer paper, Reynolds brand freezer paper works well, but there is quilter’s freezer paper available also
  • Tracing paper at least 8 ½” by 11″
  • Number 9 or 10 sharps or milliners (also called straw) needles
  • *A fine permanent marking pen, such as a .01 black or brown Micron
  • *A fabric marking pencil (recommend a mechanical marking pencil with leads that contrast with your applique fabrics)
  • Artist’s removable tape. This is white tape that will not stick to or tear paper in the book or your tracing paper.
  • *Short, thin silk or appliqué pins
  • *White thread for basting

Workshop fee:  $15 (Members: $5)
